The Problem Of Trust

I apologise if this sounds a bit negative but how many companies do you trust to do the right thing? In a dog-eat-dog world how many businesses would you trust to put morals before profit? Take the example of Google. The company philosophy is 'don't be evil', but how long can they put their customers in front of their share-holders and their morals first and foremost? I genuinely trust Google and have registered for many of their services but I am troubled by their recent activity. Take its foray into China. China has the world's fastest growing economy and, not surprisingly, many companies are looking for a slice of the pie. The dilemma is the amount of censoring the Chinese government can inflict on its citizens. I can state my views on just about everything freely but there is no policy for free speech in China. The Government goes out of its way to ensure that only a positive view of itself is presented and there is no political opposition. All those who gain power desire more and many Chinese citizens face charges for stating their 'liberal' views. Into this foray enters Google. Yes you think, someone is finally gonna tell those Communists where to stick their censorship. Wrong. Google has recently made a deal with the Chinese government that allows use of the Google Search Engine in China but restricts the inclusion of certain results that might sway public opinion. It is, of course, ridiculous to expect a company to miss out on the potential for profit China presents. But I wish someone would have the balls to just say no, to set an example to other companies and show that someone still cares for the essential human right to freedom of speech. It is clear that in this day and age that it is naive to trust companies to put morals in front of profit. Who can we trust to do the right thing?

Quotes Of The Day 2

Off my Google homepage. "The multitude of books is making us ignorant." - Voltaire "But what is the difference between literature and journalism?/ ...Journalism is unreadable and literature is not read. That is all." - Oscar Wilde "Never eat more than you can lift." - Miss Piggy "One machine can do the work of fifty ordinary men. No machine can do the work of one extraordinary man." - Elbert Hubbard

Letters From The Passport Office

Dear Sir/Madam/Confused/Other Politically Correct Terms, We are delighted to inform you that we have refused your application for a UK Passport for a number of creatively meaningless reasons. These are, namely:
  1. You are a Conservative voter (scum).
  2. There is a reflection off your glasse's lenses on your passport photo.
  3. You are smiling on your passport photo.
  4. You did not submit a passport photo.
  5. We aren't paid enough to care.

Yours Smugly,

Anonymous Government Official 23569

Have a nice day :)

Quotes Of The Day

I'm an avid user of the Google homepage and one of the less useful but constantly amusing features is the Quotes Of The Day section featuring a collection of daily quotes from quotationspage.com. If you haven't got a Gmail account you can find out more at mail.google.com or leave your address on the comments section for this post and I might send you an invite if I'm in a good mood... Here's a collection of recent quotes from the Google homepage. Enjoy. "The whole secret of life is to be interested in one thing profoundly and in a thousand things well." - Horace Walpole "The reserve of modern assertions is sometimes pushed to extremes, in which the fear of being contradicted leads the writer to strip himself of almost all sense and meaning." - Sir Winston Churchill "Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water." - WC Fields "I write down everything I want to remember. That way, instead of spending a lot of time trying to remember what it is I wrote down, I spend the time looking for the paper I wrote it down on." - Beryl Pfizer

No Oscars for Star Wars!?

I've just received the news that, despite being nominated, Revenge Of The Sith won zero awards at the Oscars. This is a travesty. Despite being the best film out of the last three Star Wars, Sith scooped nowt. I think fans will agree that the Make Up in ROTS was a tiny bit superior to that in the Chronicles Of Narnia. What make up was there in Narnia? The lion was computer-generated for crying out loud. I didn't notice any make up in Narnia to outclass the look of the wrinkled Palpatine and the burnt-to-cinders Darth Vader. This is proof that Hollywood s Star Wars. I think Sith should have scooped Make Up, Best Picture and Special Effects at least. But maybe I'm just tired and grouchy. Yep, probably. But I bet I'll still be mad in the morning.

Kerrang! Radio- The last hope for disgruntled Radio 1 listeners

If you're a fan of decent rock music you've no doubt despaired at the gradual pollution of the airwaves. R and B, Hip Hop, Rap and the rest of the crew have effectively wiped all traces of rock music or alternative tunes from stations such as radio 1. This is not the radio presenter's fault entirely. They are paid to play what the public want and don't really have the option to do otherwise. Unfortunately the British public seem to have developed a taste for dressed-up ringtones and karaoke music. Now I would bet serious amounts of cash that if you turned on Radio 1 at any time of the day (excluding Jo Whiley's slot) you would hear some rap artist ranting on and boring the heck out of fans of decent music. The situation is getting desperate. Enter Kerrang! Radio. A station dedicated to the best rock music on the planet and presented by people with serious taste and a genuine sense of humour. Hallelujah! If you are a fan of the likes of Yellowcard, The Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes, Fallout Boy and the Foo Fighters you've just discovered rock nirvana. You'll hear from well-known, obscure and utterly awesome bands. Your top ten bands will become your top 50. You'll hear from bands with the kind of talent you never new existed. Oh yes, this is heaven. This is a radio station unrestricted by the pull of public opinion, a station that plays whatever they damn well like. And whatever they damn well like is at its worst great and its best fabulous. So there is hope. Abandon Radio 1 and listen to real music. You won't be disappointed. Listen at
  • 105.2FM if you live in the midlands.
  • kerrangradio.co.uk if you have an internet connection and abundant curiosity.

Trade Justice: Say No To Free Trade

'International trade between my company and the West is like a giraffe and an antelope competing for fruit that is at the top of a tree. You can make the ground beneath their feet level, but the contest will still not be fair.' Rev Dr Aboagye-Mensah, Christian Council Of Ghana Rich governments have a new policy to abolish world poverty. Free Trade. The idea is that Free Trade removes the barriers preventing poor countries from trading directly with rich countries and companies, creating a level playing field. The markets of poor countries would be free from the intervention of the countries' own government. Great you say. Wrong. Poor countries cannot compete blow-for-blow with huge organisations. The large companies, with their huge stock and resources, can easily undercut the prices of the local farmers in countries such as Africa. And without the help of their local government the local farmers would be easily crushed in a straight fight with the large business empires. What poor countries really need is the right to control their own market and economy, imposing sanctions to defend local producers and the ability to charge foreign importers and limit the amount of foreign imports allowed into the country. In this way the countries could build a stable local economy to help bring local people out of poverty and give them a fighting chance. Rich companies would be unable to te the market as they would be forced to pay fees in order to import goods and there would be a limit on how much they could bring into the country. Poor countries have the right to the best policies. Free Trade will only make the situation worse. Rich countries should stop advising the poor countries to adopt free Trade and allow them to control their own markets. Only in this way can the local ecomonies of third world countries rise out of the depths of poverty. Resources The Christian Aid charity is dedicated to fighting for Trade Justice. I made use of their free guide 'Trade Justice: Turning words into action Campaign Guide' in writing this blog. Head to christianaid.org for more information. Please help the charities campaigning for Trade Justice. They need your support. So do the poor of this world.
